We had a ton of fun shooting floats and street style at the city’s annual Pride Parade! So great to see so much love and support from schools, businesses and organizations.

Wondering how to get the same cool effects in your photos? Lomography’s Fisheye and Spinner 360 camera styles will do the trick. To add a retro tinge to your pics, use their X-Pro Chrome 100 film!

CITY OF CRAFT BLOOMS AT TRINITY-ST PAUL’S

Story by Odessa Paloma Parker

Photos by Mark Binks

What better way to spend a dreary Saturday than surrounded by some of Toronto’s coolest and quirkiest craft work? Plaid was on the scene of City of Craft’s first Spring show and we loved what we saw!

Greeting us at the door was a craft section by vendors 14 and under, and a photo booth by Have & Hold Design. The main event space was jam-packed with  everything from clothing and accessories, to posters and prints, to pincushions and ceramics.

Our favourites included the 3-D gift wrapping paper by Kid Icarus; Falconwright’s bold and bright leather clutches and coin purses; Raymond Biesinger’s over-sized illustrations;  the “Baseball Card” packs by Lemonade (retro illustrations of ballplayers that come with a pack of gum); the cat-print pillow by Lines by: Davis; and Anna Jane McIntyre’s “colour them yourself” postcards.

Watch out for future City of Craft events this year, including their 2-day show in December – you never know what kind of treasures await.

450 CANADIAN ARTISANS PRESENT THEIR MADE-WITH-LOVE WARES

Story by Odessa Paloma Parker

Photos by Mark Binks

It’s that time again! The One of a Kind Show & Sale (OOAK) has set up at the Direct Energy Building at the CNE, and we took along Lomography’s La Sardina “Cubic” camera and some Lomography CN 800 ASA film to document the sights.

While we originally thought we’d be checking out the fashion-related booths, there’s so much to see, smell and taste at OOAK that we found ourselves taking pictures of much more than that. It’s always inspiring as a small, Canadian-run business to see what other local entrepreneurs are up to, and from Eikcam’s beautiful ceramic wares to Mehoi’s adorable art, you won’t be able to leave the show without picking up at least one handmade treasure.

Speaking with a few artisans on-site, the reasons for being there seemed to ring true for all – the opportunity to showcase their locally-made work in an atmosphere where shoppers are specifically looking for special items. “The One of a Kind Show has really changed my whole business,” says Oh Dina! designer Nicole McInnis; her Halifax-based line of millinery and hair accessories started only a few years ago, and she feels her exposure at OOAK was a ‘make or break’ moment. “I represented Ryerson three years ago at the show, and I didn’t even really know I had a business, and then they had me back this year.” Noting that her work initially sold out in five hours during her first stint at the show, McInnis says that it was this boost that helped her realize that she did indeed have a business, and one about to take off, at that.

Jenna Fenwick, whose line Jenna Rose boasts beautiful silk-screened purses, pillows and wall hangings, appreciates the opportunity to meet her customers face-to-face. “There’s certainly a lot of traffic that comes through [the show], and the people that come here definitely expect to purchase handmade, so it’s different from other markets where there might be mass-produced items and larger companies…. For me, it’s great to meet the customers and get feedback; a lot of my work I sell online or to retailers, so to meet the customer directly and see people interact with my work is really beneficial for me.”

Other highlights at this year’s OOAK include Avril Loreti Modern Home – playful housewares from Paint Chip Placemats to Moustache Handkerchiefs; Hilary Cosgrove’s whimsical owl-themed art; Jesse Bromm’s miniature scenes on artificial grass; and Nicole Tarasick’s Canadiana-themed screen printed goods. Also of note is the Craft Community of Canada display, featuring the work of emerging artisans from across the country and from some of Canada’s most renowned art programs.

Of course we can’t mention all the vendors on-site, but can say it’s well worth the admission price ($12 for adults) to spend an afternoon or evening at OOAK! Take some time this week or weekend to explore what Canada has to offer. But hurry, the show closes Sunday, April 1st!

Tonight (March 29th, 2012) the One of a Kind Show & Sale is open late, from 10am – 11pm! Regular hours, admission fees and vendor information can be found here.

TAKE A PEEK AT WHAT WE SAW, LOMO-STYLE

Story by Odessa Paloma Parker

Photos by Mark Binks

Our Staff Photographer, Mark Binks, took these shots during Vintage’s Night Out and WordMasterCard Fashion Week on a LOMO LC-Wide camera using Lomography 35 mm X-pro Slide 200 film.

#VNOTO was a great success, with 15 participating stores bustling throughout the night. It was great to see so many shoppers out – it felt like Hallowe’en! We can’t wait to do it again in the Fall.

And as always, we truly enjoyed checking out the action inside and outside the tents during fashion week.
