SEVENTH EDITION

Story by Laura Hermiston

Kontravoid “Cut to Cleanse”

Kontravoid is the solo project of Cam FIndlay- writer/producer of Parallels, as well as the tour drummer for Crystal Castles, and now currently the tour drummer for Trust. Findlay has left the kit behind and entered into the spotlight as a solo artist. His self-titled album is a dark, brooding, pop masterpiece and will transition quite well from your summer playlist to the fall like a pair of ankle booties. A deluxe edition of the record was released this week and it features additional tracks and remixes.

Psst… Kontravoid is going to be in our Fall/Winter print issue. Keep your eyes peeled for a sneak peek video behind the scenes of our photoshoot with Findlay.

Silm Twig “Priscilla”

Slim Twig is back with a psych-influenced LP. The album replaces analog drum machines and scratched record samples with the psychedelic rumblings of live instrumentation: pianos, organs, guitar, bass, drums.  Watch the video for the first single “Priscilla” off of his new album , Sof’ Sike, expected out on August 21st. We can’t wait to hear another new direction from Silm Twig, but his video will tide us over until then.

Dusted Total Dust

Dusted has quickly become a favorite over here at Plaid. If you haven’t already- you should check out the video interview we did with Brian and Leon last week. They are not only talented and have made an album of the utmost quality (i.e. it is not another thoughtless low-fi garage album), but they are pretty funny too. The more you listen to this album the more you will discover little nuances in songs that you didn’t recognize before. Their first single, “Into the Atmosphere” is an obvious attention grabber. “All Comes Down”, “Bruises”, and “Long it Lasts” are a few other tracks that I can’t stop singing along to. Dusted will be playing with Chad VanGaalen (an obvious similar artist to Dusted) and Cousins at the Mod Club on July 26th. Stream the full EP below.

Cousins “Jules”

Cousins (who are playing the Mod Club with Dusted and Chad VanGaalen as previously mentioned) have released a video for “Jules” off of their album, The Palm at the End of the Mind. It’s a psychedelic video with disembodies jeans, headless headbanging, and pizza.

Matthew Dear “Her Fantasy”

“Her Fantasy” is off of Matthew Dears’ new album, Beams.  The video is an homage to Avant Garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger in a self-described “mash-up”. This album presents a strange yet familiar dreamworld. It is both dancefloor ready with warm synths and major keys but is offset with his voice that sounds like it is being sung in two octaves- just a few of the odd details found throughout his music.
