OSHEAGA 2012 SHOW REVIEW

Story by Laura Cappe

The sun had set; the air was thick, but cool – a result of the constant showers that had cleared only minutes before. A crowd of wet and sticky fans began to form at the Green Stage, with mud stained legs and smiles as big as the sun – getting ready to become enchanted by the power of M83. Beginning fifteen minutes earlier than scheduled, forced fans trickling in from prior shows to run through the Osheaga forest to catch the beautifully frantic “Intro”. As the music swelled, the crowd cheered, strong boys began to lift happy girls onto their shoulders, shoeless brave-hearts began to glide through the hands of excited viewers, while others just let the sounds consume them; dancing freely without a care. From the stunning build of “Intro” came “Teen Angst” sliding into the absolutely contagious “Reunion”, dipping in and out of their discography into “We Own The Sky” – one of the most magical numbers of the night. Morgan Kibby took the reigns of the first verse and sleighed it, wailing into the microphone, tearing up the hearts of everyone listening. As lead singer Anthony Gonzalez joined in, thousands of arms soared up towards the sky in attempts to feel the music and capture the neon stage lights in their hands. On and on, the show continued to be consistently euphoric, altering reality – infusing a dreamlike state into the minds of both their drugged-out and sober audience members. The pinnacle of their one-hour set however, was “Midnight City” off of the appropriately titled “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming”; a moment so powerful, any pretty string of sentences could not do it justice. M83 was a beautiful end to the festival weekend. Until next year…
