Our eyes do not always provide the whole truth. Deceit — in nature, mythology, and our imagination — inspired the works of Christie Lau and Caroline Wright in Deception, their first exhibition together.
Intrigued by the parallels between the human world and the animal kingdom, Lau’s work focuses on how both humans and animals use deception as a tool for survival. Her pieces also draw on mythology and fairytales, where nothing is as it seems and the lines of reality are blurred.
Wright’s work is in itself deceptive. Her abstract landscapes seem both real and imagined. Using rice paper as a canvas, Wright adds texture to her images, mimicking real landscapes and beguiling the viewer. Wright submerses her audience in both her imagination and their own, forcing them to question what is real or imagined.
