In past collections, Lucian Matis has relied on major embellishments and ornate detailing to bring his opulent designs to life. For Spring/Summer 2013, he presented a collection that instead drew from the strength of clean silhouettes, deeply rich hues and powerful prints to imbue luxury into the looks.
Mosaic tiling and kaleidoscopic pattern-on-pattern provided the most impact during the show, finding themselves on everything from slim capri pants to voluminous skirts; texture was given by way of the restrained use of embossed alligator print on a few outsized pieces including a rich mustard yellow jacket and full skirt, and an over-the-top black gown.
The colour red gave a key glamour factor to pieces, as it was found in both buttery leather pieces, and as the key accent in a baroque vine-like pattern used in a number of looks.
It’s clear that Matis was inspired by warmer climes like Italy and Spain, and his fusion of both the luxe artistic aspects of their culture and modern cuts to the garments was a winning combination.
